Balay Mindanaw Group of NGOs is conducting its relief efforts in cooperation and coordination with other groups and agencies \u2013 to help peoples and communities severely damaged by Super Typhoon Yolanda (international codename: Haiyan). With the massive destruction brought about the Typhoon and the coming in of immense global and local responses to this, Balay Mindanaw made quick assessment on the ground and identified needs, linked with local agencies and contacts to work with and recommended options to hasten the provision of assistance at this point in time.<\/p>\n

Considering a more intensive and concentrated intervention, Balay Mindanaw selected to focus its operations in Ormoc, Leyte and Capiz in Panay Island.<\/p>\n

For Ormoc City<\/b><\/p>\n

For 4 days (Nov 11-14) aftermath of the supertyphoon, Balay Mindanaw together with Disaster Aid International strongly noted that the area is in desperate need for assistance especially food and water. Houses, school buildings and other major infrastructures like electricity, water and communication facilities are completely damaged. No medical aid yet were provided to the wounded and injured.<\/p>\n

With the daily reports from the team, Balay Mindanaw started coordinating the following:<\/p>\n

Relief distribution. BMG together with PRWORKS VIS-MIN set up the logistic and transport hub in Cebu with 2GO that provides free transport services of relief good and relief workers\/volunteers.<\/p>\n

Balay Mindanaw targets 1,000 food packs worth P400 each (5 kilos or rice, canned goods, bottled water and biscuits). PRWORKS was able to mobilized energetic student-volunteers at Talisay Malayan Academy for the repacking of relief goods which was speedily done and ready for transport to Ormoc.<\/p>\n

Medical Assistance. Balay Mindanaw organized the medical team for Ormoc with Dr. Cagape and Dr De Leon and the MERT from Johanniter-Germany (Medical and Emergency Response Team). 12 members of MERT arrived in Ormoc last Nov. 14 followed by 10 nurses from the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) of Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental who volunteered to assist the team. Medicines boxes and health kits from Johanniter are already secured at the Mactan International Airport.<\/p>\n

For Capiz and Iloilo<\/b><\/p>\n

One of the hardest-hit areas apart from Leyte is the Province of Capis. After a quick assessment on the ground in Panay Island from Nov 11-14, Balay Mindanaw today set its team to further its disaster response at the community level. Battered to a great extend by the supertyphoon, Capiz also required critical assistance, having massive damage of homes, infrastructure, agriculture, livelihood and other infrastructures like the electricity, communication lines, churches, seaport and airport.<\/p>\n

Balay Mindanaw identified the municipality of Pres. Roxas and Pontavedra as the areas of assistance, in coordination with the Local Government Units. Likewise, Balay Mindanaw saw the destruction in northern part of Iloilo and considers the Municipality of Estancia as among the hardest-hit areas.<\/p>\n

Relief Operations. Already, first wave of 1,000 food packs are being prepared in cooperation with the Disaster Management Community of Reconciliation (DM-CoR). This contains standard relief pack: 5 kilos of rice, canned goods, bottled water and biscuits \u2013 worth P400 pesos per pack.<\/p>\n

Resource Mobilization<\/b>
\nAs of today, more and more friends, friends of friends as well as donors have committed to help in the disaster response work of Balay Mindanaw, dubbed as, Disaster Risk Reduction, Resiliency buiding and Emergency Assistance Mission or DREAM.
\nOur partner-donor in disaster response since the aftermath of Typhoon Sendong, The Johanniter of the Federal Republic of Germany and Disaster Aid International, have committed not just funding but also human, logistical and technical support.
\nCordAID and Dougherty Foundation also have committed to provide assistance to Balay Mindanaw\u2019s efforts. Balay Mindanaw is also grateful to friends in Mindanao, in Italy (the Filipino Women\u2019s Council), Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom and Ireland who are doing their own selfless ways of mobilizing help to this initiative and giving their own share.<\/p>\n
