CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0The youth are like \u201crough diamonds\u201d, waiting to discovery and polishing\u00a0to reveal their full value in nation-building.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This was the message of both Mayor Oscar \u201cOca\u201d S. Moreno and Balay Mindanaw Foundation, Inc\u00a0(BMFI) pioneer and Chairman Emeritus Charlito \u201cKaloy\u201d Z. Manlupig during the launching of Leadership Communities (LeadCom 2015) at the Balay Mindanaw Peace Center recently.<\/p>\n

LeadCom is a program of Ayala Foundation that aims to empower \u00a0youth by enhancing their involvement in addressing their communities’\u00a0pressing needs and issues through projects\u00a0that they themselves will propose, plan and implement. Ayala Foundation implements\u00a0this program in\u00a0partnership with BMFI, JCI Kagayhaan Gold, Ayala Young Leaders Alumni Association \u2013 Region 10, Ayala Business Club – Cagayan de Oro, and the Local Government Unit of Cagayan de Oro.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe youth is a potent human resource with the capacity to convey learning and become catalysts of change; they have important views about issues that both confront and represent them and other sectors. Since the youth do not have much vested personal interests that are observed in the position and assertion of adults, their ideas and views are nearer to the truth and need of people,\u201d said Romcy Madronio, program lead of LeadCom. Madronio continues that because of this, LeadCom offers guidance and training to enhance youth potential to serve.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Manlupig then acknowledged the importance of youth formation. \u201cWe are all talents waiting to be discovered\u2026Sooner or later,\u00a0thet person or institution or group who will discover us will come,\u201d he said, sharing how he, too, underwent mentoring and formation as a youth and how the principles he developed then helped make Balay Mindanaw what it is today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIn a sense, Balay Mindanaw is also a product of a youth formation program\u2026 Many of the principles that I am able to share with Balay Mindanaw came from him, my mentor,\u201d he shared.<\/div>\n

\n

However, Mayor Moreno emphasized that LeadCom \u201cwill not make you a perfect individual,\u201d Moreno said. Instead, he continues, it \u201cgives [the youth] a better idea [of] what it takes to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreno also stressed that while the modern world of the youth of today is very different from the times when he was still a young man, \u201cthe fundamentals remain the same.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you are going through now will make you what you will be in the future. To put it differently:\u00a0 what you will be in the future is what you are doing today. And this program gives you a snapshot,\u00a0<\/em>a glimpse [of] how it is to be a leader, how it is to be a man and woman for others. You are here not for yourselves,\u00a0 but so you will learn, to have some ideas what it is to be part of a team, to be part of an undertaking,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

Both Manlupig and Moreno encouraged the youth taking part of LeadCom 2015 to rise to the challenge, to not waste the opportunity given them but to grasp and soak the lessons they will learn from the program since \u201clearning is continuing, it never stops.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis program is one opportunity for the youth to discover themselves (and) their direction through their role models, mentors, formators and eventually close friends (that you will) never forget. This program is an opportunity for you to undergo a process that will help you realize your) full potential as human, as youth leaders,\u201d Manlupig said.<\/p>\n

Moreno also encouraged the youth to \u201ctreasure\u201d their time with LeadCom, as he cautioned them that the process of leadership can be like Philippine politics where intrigues cannot be avoided. \u201cWhat is more important is to understand the others,\u201d he advises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The LeadCom Launch was the kickoff the continuing training and empowerment of community-based youth organizations by helping them design and implement projects that address their communities\u2019 most pressing needs. It enables young leaders to make meaningful contributions\u00a0to the development of their communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

LeadCom 2015 will train and prepare a new batch of youth groups from ten barangays of Cagayan de Oro City to rise to the challenge of transforming their communities. These barangays are Bayanga, Mambuaya, Dansolihon, Tuburan, Pigasag-an, Tumpagon, Pagatpat, Gusa, Lapasan, and Nazareth \u2014 all partner barangays of BMFI.<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThese youth groups will undergo the ideation and project management phase with workshops and capability sessions to effectively implement their proposed project. LeadCom will strengthen our youth\u2019s desire of being active citizens. It will continue to transform more lives, which someday will make the difference our society needs,\u201d said Sabrina \u201cSabcee\u201d Garcia-Balais, BMFI CDO Team leader.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Last year, youth groups from nine barangays in the city successfully developed and implemented projects through the first ever LeadCom program. The projects they implemented \u00a0ranged from solid waste management, youth skills training, youth empowerment, to advocacy against illegal drugs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Ayala Foundation, the social development arm of the Ayala group of companies, launched LeadCom in 2012 as part of its efforts to \u201dcreate\u201d communities where people are creative, productive, self-reliant, and proud to be Filipino.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Since 2012, LeadCom has trained 953 youth leaders and 754 facilitators. The youth groups have then in turn implemented 97 projects that have touched 6,771 direct beneficiaries and mobilized 827 volunteers from local stakeholders. LeadCom has awarded a total of Php 970,000.00 to different youth groups projects\u00a0all over the country.<\/p>\n

Despite their potential, many young people still consider their contributions to\u00a0society as insignificant. Addressing this, Moreno advised them to continue because someday and\u00a0somehow, someone will benefit from that insignificant contribution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAll of us will pass away. We are just a fraction of the earth\u2019s history. We are just a fraction, but let that fraction matter. No matter how small our contribution maybe, no matter how insignificant our contribution may have been, that does not matter. What\u2019s important is that we are committed and that commitment will infect others especially your\u00a0younger siblings or cousins and encourage them also to serve.\u201d\u00a0(Bong D.
