As our quick assessment team continues to establish linkages and continue assessment from Bohol, we have also been receiving overwhelming support from friends and partners who also wish to extend their help to the areas stricken by the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that occurred last Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 8:15 in the morning.<\/p>\n

As of the latest NDRRMC report this morning (October 19, 2013 at 6am), a total of 695,466 families or 3,492,496 persons were affected in 1,373 barangays in 53 municipalities and 8 cities in 6 provinces of Regions VI and VII. Out of this, about one in every ten (79,009 families or 372,565 persons) were displaced and now located both outside and inside 86 evacuation centers. 175 individuals have been reported dead, 487 injured and 17 missing, most of whom are residents of Bohol.<\/p>\n

In response to this, Balay Mindanaw has decided to carry on our learnings from our disaster response experience after the typhoon Pablo that devastated Davao Oriental, and the crisis of armed conflict followed by floods in Zamboanga City.<\/p>\n

Among our first decisions was to go barangay-based and barangay-focused in order to utilize what limited resources we have in the most effective way. We have also decided to maximize local, Bohol-based resources, partners and volunteers so that Bol-anons may not remain victims of this calamity, but resources to their own recovery.<\/p>\n

Yesterday evening, our quick assessment team sent this update from their first day on the field:<\/p>\n

Day 4 Bohol Earthquake Updates from the Assessment Team<\/b><\/p>\n

Before our first day of assessment here in Bohol ends, the team were able to go to Municipality of Maribojoc and Loon amidst the at least 6 aftershocks that we experienced. We hired two pump boats to reach the Municipality.\u00a0 Although there is an alternative route from Tagbiliran to Loon thorough the mountains, we still have to explore this potential route. This will take us to Loon from Tagbiliran by land in at least 60 minutes. However there is very high probability to landslides due to aftershocks.\u00a0 What was evident for us was the overall damage to infrastructure of the Earthquake and properties and houses. It also produced massive landslides.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As to query of Ate Bibing (Mordeno, Balay Mindanaw\u2019s Executive Director), based on our assessment, Tagbiliran only suffered partial infrastructure damages in ports, churches and roads. Minor damages to houses. Electricity is also stable as of today.<\/p>\n

There were no reported casualties and missing persons in Tagbiliran. Some malls were still closed and classes at all levels were suspended.<\/p>\n

For the Municipality of Maribojoc, we were able to talk with Mayor Leoncio Evasco Jr. And 3 Barangay Captains. Mayor expressed that all goods and assistance should passed through the Municipal Local Government Unit (MLGU) as to avoid conflict among the affected 22 barangays. The MLGU is dividing the goods equally among the barangays.<\/p>\n

Mayor Evasco suggested that we visit the tents set up in Barangay Anislag, just 5 minutes away from Barangay Poblacion. After the Earthquake, people were setting up cluster camps in the schools and near their houses. We talked with Brgy. Captain Samuel Alderite of Anislag. He shared that around 200 households are camping in the oval and school grounds. People are still traumatized and they prefer to stay on open spaces.\u00a0 Barangay Anislag has 3 Casualties and 70 Injured reported.<\/p>\n

After Barangay Anislag, we also visited Barangay Lincod and Barangay Sn Vicente. The two Barangays have a reported a combined number of 59 injuries. Barangay Anislag expressed the need for tents, food, and water. Barangays San Vicente and Licod also shared their needs for food, water, and non food items. Some of the families were staying and camping outside their homes not in the evacuation centers.<\/p>\n

We then went to Municipality of Loon. About 4 PM, we experienced a strong aftershock while taking pictures in the temporary tent shelters in their plaza. We were not able to talk to the Mayor of Loon as he was busy speaking with former Senator Dick Gordon at the time. We pulled out of the area by 5:30 PM.\u00a0 Tomorrow we will go to Municipality of Cortes and meet with some partners. Bernard and Celoy were able to canvass some goods. We will send it tomorrow and hope to compare prices in Cagayan de Oro City.<\/p>\n

Womens Development Center Bohol is focusing on San Isidro and Antequera. While BIDEF is focusing on Loon.<\/li>\n
  8. Fr. Desidereo \u201cKiking\u201d Magdusa of our Lady of Lourdes, who is also working with Bishop thru SAC.<\/li>\n
  9. We have also coordinated with the ICP and local government units.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
