Alternative lawyers, human rights workers endorse Robredo
Ban against anti-democracy candidates sought

More than 200 alternative lawyers, legal advocates, paralegals, and human rights defenders from different areas in the country made public their support for vice-presidential candidate and Naga Representative Leni Robredo in the coming May 9 elections.

Robredo, a human rights lawyer and development worker prior to becoming a legislator, was praised that her platform, ‘Inaangat ang nasa laylayan ng lipunan’ focuses on poverty and inequality.

“Laban namin ang laban ni Leni,” they said in a statement (Copy of full statement below).

According to the group, the endorsement extends their advocacy for programs and policies that “empower communities through equal access to education, employment, food, land and other resources, and justice.”

“To champion her is to elevate our shared aspirations for gender equality, peace and sustainable development,” they added.

Signatories include individuals from different civil society organizations from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, including Ateneo Human Rights Center, Balaod Mindanaw, Humanitarian Legal Assistance Foundation, Children’s Legal Bureau, Women’s Legal and Human Rights Bureau, Environmental Legal Assistance Center, Kaisahan, Rainbow Rights, and Tanggol Kalikasan. Also among them, Alternative Law Groups and Saligan, where Robredo served as coordinator of its branch in Bicol before running for Congress.

Although the list also includes former colleagues and those who know her personally, they explained that sharing Robredo’s roots was not the reason for releasing the statement, “…not because she is one of us, but because she is one with the marginalized individuals and communities in their relentless advocacy for justice.”

The group also appealed to Filipino voters to reject candidates against democracy, referring to “personalities with tainted political histories and short-sighted promises.”

“We condemn beliefs and behavior that contribute to promoting extrajudicial killings, gender-based violence, as well as discrimination against the poor and marginalized,” they said.

They emphasized civil society’s role as government watchdogs, citing the fight against Martial Law that led to the People Power Revolution as an example. According to them, human rights violators and plunderers must be held accountable, “from the years of the dictatorship until recent times.”

“Action must include punishment for the perpetrators, just compensation for the victims, and recovery of ill-gotten wealth,” they said.

STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Ref. Atty. Marlon J. Manuel (0917-5326446)

Laban Namin ang Laban ni Leni

We, alternative lawyers, legal advocates, paralegals, and human rights defenders, express our support for Leni Robredo, and affirm her platform, “Inaangat ang nasa laylayan ng lipunan,” to address critical issues of poverty and inequality, at this crucial juncture for our country.

We enjoin voters to choose Leni for her commitment to transparency and reform, and to answer the call to be collaborative partners in nation-building, going beyond the traditional role of citizens as mere beneficiaries and critics.

Our endorsement of a true public servant like Leni is equal to our continuing commitment to the advocacy for programs and policies that empower communities through equal access to education, employment, food, land and other resources, and justice. To champion her is to elevate our shared aspirations for gender equality, peace and sustainable development.

As individuals who value social justice and human rights, we condemn beliefs and behavior that contribute to promoting extrajudicial killings, gender-based violence, as well as discrimination against the poor and marginalized.

We appeal to Filipino voters to reject electoral candidates whose profiles defy and suppress our country’s democratic principles and practices.

We assert the importance of the role of civil society as watchdogs of government as embodied in the fight against Martial Law that led to the People Power Revolution.

Beyond this, we continue to demand accountability for the repeated cases of human rights violations and continuing plunder of public funds, from the years of the dictatorship until recent times. Action must include punishment for the perpetrators, just compensation for the victims, and recovery of ill-gotten wealth.

Let us not simply vote for personalities with tainted political histories and short-sighted promises.

We want a transparent leader who will espouse and enable our own engagement and participation in good governance, and we believe vice-presidential aspirant, Leni Robredo, has exemplified these features throughout her career as an alternative lawyer, development worker, and legislator.

We make public our support for Leni not because she is one of us, but because she is one with the marginalized individuals and communities in their relentless advocacy for justice.

Laban namin ang laban ni Leni.
