Peace Stalk! “A House that Volunteers Built”

My Thoughts on Celebrating the Spirit of Volunteerism and Citizenship

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]My Thoughts on Celebrating the Spirit of Volunteerism and Citizenship

12 December 2015

Balay Mindanaw began with nothing except a few good women and men who wanted to practice activist citizenship, and volunteered to be part of the journey towards equity, development and peace way back in 1996. We had no money, no office, no track record. Only us, volunteers. That was twenty years ago.

The first YOS, SOS, KKP and JVP volunteers came. And more volunteers came year after year after year. Then we had British, Irish, German, American, Australian, Maltese, Khmer, Nepali, and more Pinoy volunteers. Now we have VOCEP volunteers with us. Our first YOS volunteers are now key managers, leaders and
mentors. And when we respond to disasters, we have a large pool of volunteers from here and abroad.

Balay Mindanaw is a house that volunteers built. Now it is a home of volunteers.

Having begun my journey as volunteer myself, I take volunteer programs and the volunteers very seriously. I know that working as volunteer can either make or break us.

I thought before that mentoring and nurturing volunteers are my one way mission.
I realized however that it is the volunteers who are nurturing me.

I thought it was my mission to inspire and energize these young people.
It turned out they are the ones inspiring and energizing me.

I continue to grow, be nurtured and be inspired as I journey with my fellow volunteers.

To you, I sincerely say: Thank you very much for helping build our house, and making it your home. Thank you very much for also mentoring, inspiring, nurturing, energizing and sustaining me and my colleagues in Balay Mindanaw…[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css_animation=”appear” css=”.vc_custom_1456142653980{padding-top: 3px !important;padding-right: 3px !important;padding-bottom: 3px !important;padding-left: 3px !important;background-color: #dddddd !important;}”]

Peace Stalk!

I have finally decided to open this space to share with you my thoughts, some mundane, some trivial and hopefully some profound.

I have been getting some words of encouragement to pursue writing and sharing my thoughts but I have always hesitated. I am actually more comfortable just keeping my written thoughts in my phone or tablet. Sometimes they find their way to my fb posts.

While I may have some flashes of writing brilliance (ehem), I also know that I often suffer from what others call writer’s block – and what I call plain laziness.

Seriously now, what made me decide to do this?

I realized that there is big probability of waking up one day, and there would not be any chance to say the things I wanted to say. Say it now.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
