As you may have read from our previous posts, Balay Mindanaw has decided to respond to the devastation left behind by the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Bohol last Tuesday. Here is our first update:

Situation Overview:
An earthquake with magnitude 7.2 occurred near Tagbilaran, Bohol Philippines at 00:12:37:20 UTC (08:12:37:20 GMT -8, Philippine time) on October 15, 2013. Location: 13 miles (21 km) NE of Tagbilaran, Bohol, Philippines; 36 miles (58 km) S of Cebu, Cebu, Philippines; 58 miles (93 km) ENE of Dumaguete, Negros, Philippines; 394 miles (633 km) SSE of MANILA, Philippines. As of 5pm of October 18, 2013, PHIVOLCS recorded 1,694 aftershocks, 29 of which were felt. (Source: NDRRMC, PHIVOLCS)

Landslides occurred in the following areas:
– In Cebu: Barangays Baclayon, Albur, Eli Boulevard Poblacion, Lower Becerril, Sitio Pondohan Upper Becerril, and Cebu highway in Boljoon; Barangay Kawasan, Aloguinsan, Cebu; Barangays Gutlang, Canulam, Cabantug, Lapay, and Bulasa in Argao, Cebu.
– In Bohol: Barangays Buangan, Caboy, Tontonan, Danahaw in Clarin; Barangays Banban and Poblacion in Lila; Barangays Cancatac, Corella; Barangay Dorol, Corella; Barangays Sudlon and Del Monte in Alicia; Barangay Candasag, Loboc; Barangays Cabacnitan and Bonifacio in Bilar; Liloan National Highways in Cortes; Gunido, Dimiao; Barangays Viga and Ubujan in Atequera, Barangay Biasong, Loon; and Dagohoy Hills and Magtangtang in Danao.
A stampede was reported to have occurred at the Barba Sports Complex in Toledo City and Pinamunghan Auditorium, both in Cebu. (Source: NDRRMC)

As of 5pm of October 18, 2013:
Dead: 173 (160 in Bohol, 12 in Cebu, 1 in Siquijor)
Injured: 498 (311 in Bohol, 182 in Cebu, 3 in Siquijor, 1 in Iloilo, 1 in Negros Oriental)
Missing: 20 (All in Bohol; 10 in Loon, 4 in Antiquera, 3 in Tagbilaran, 3 in Clarin)

Affected:
680,150 families / 3,426,957 persons were affected in 1,306 barangays in 50 municipalities and 8 cities in 6 provinces of Region VI and VII.
72,253 families / 353,785 persons were displaced. 21,023 families / 104,012 persons are inside 86 evacuation centers. 54,230 families / 249,773 persons are outside evacuation centers. (Source: NDRRMC)

Balay Mindanaw Quick Assessment Team Update:
Area Identification:
BM’s Quick Assessment Team identified the three hardest-hit areas are Maribujoc, Antequera and Loon. These areas fit in the criteria of being massively damaged but readily accessible. However, they are still impassable by four-wheel vehicles. The QAT is still scouting for possible focus barangays.
Possible Hazards:
Landslides and aftershocks were still being felt as of the QAT’s last update. Hence, they decided to take a sea route in order to avoid these risks. (Loon and Maribujoc are reachable by boat)
Immediate Needs Identified:
Water ( we could set the skyhydrants if these would be available from DAI in the area so that we could minimize the use of bottled waters )
