Balay Mindanaw Disaster Response Report

We gladly and humbly share with you this first report two weeks after we decided to temporarily stop posting daily updates/reports on Balay Mindanaw's Disaster Response activities as we transition from primarily relief and rehabilitation work to a more long-term programmatic package of interventions.

We have formulated a two-year program we now call the Balay Mindanaw Post-Disaster Recovery, Adaptation and Resiliency Building Program. We will be utilizing the remainder of your generous donations for the initial implementation of this Program. AUSAID has also expressed interest to provide some initial funds. We are now reaching out to you and other resource partners for possible partnerships.

While mapping out strategic long-term interventions, we have also sustained our support work for the three tent communities and five barangays, expanded and strengthened partnerships, and continued exploring and mobilizing more resources.

Up to this day, we have never stopped in our efforts at responding to the needs of the communities assigned to our care. We have been conducting regular monitoring and needs assessment to ensure that resources are utilized in the best possible way. Balay Mindanaw teams have been assigned to give special attention to the three tent communities.

January 18 was a special day for the Balay Mindanaw Peace Center as it marked the 7th year of its journey. We celebrated the day by sharing lunch with 600 residents in the two tent communities in Indahag, and enjoying the magic entertainment shows with them.

During that day, we also distributed 69 packs of used clothing with sanitary pads, slippers, and underwear in Tent Community 1; 79 packs (16 pieces each pack) of Sanitary Pads in Tent Communities 1 and 3; and school supplies pack to 115 school children in Tent Communities 1 and 2.

In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, we also distributed 200 repair kits in Zone 6, Barangay Kausawagan. We will distribute more repair kits to at least 700 residents of Barangays 17 and Bonbon.

For more than three weeks now, we have been providing water to the two tent communities in Indahag since their establishment, in partnership with FIBECO. We also distributed bottled drinking water (2 liters each ) to 127 families in three tent communities last January 21. Water testing is also being conducted regularly in the 3 sites.

The residents of the Indahag Tent Community 1 had a general meeting attended by various support groups like CRS, All Hands Together and others, and discussed WaSH concerns, and the importance of community working together to maintain sanitation and hygiene (proper waste segregation, usage of water, maintenance of toilets).

A pilot squat latrine was already constructed with the help of HRC-Oxfam in Indahag Tent Community 1. We did a rapid latrine assessment for 20 men and women in the commune who used the latrine. CRS consolidated the data and respondents preferred the squat latrine, than the ecosan and portalets. This will be made basis for requesting additional 3 latrines for TC1.

The Balay Mindanaw Team (led by KPMFI) is working with the three tent communities as they prepare for the implementation of various appropriate livelihood and social enterprise projects.

January 25 was another significant day as it marked the 40th day after the Sendong devastation. Residents in the tent communities and the barangays commemorated the day with prayers, songs and reflection sessions.

We were also able to provide 30 school supplies kits, and food packages of sardines and noodles to affected DAR personnel. We also partnered with 4th ID in providing snacks (spaghetti and chicken) to 500 persons at 2 tent communities. Twelve radio sets were also distributed in Gusa.

Our volunteers have been tapped in Shelter Assessment by the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED).

We also continue to provide Psycho-Social support to the survivors. Our BM-KPMFI Teams organized and offered free massage, haircut, and cleaning to the residents of the tent communities and of Barangay Consolacion.

Some of the key activities conducted in relation to PSS were: Psycho Social Executive Session with MINCODE partners in CDO and other CSOs. There were 14 participants who joined the session who are heads of organizations operating in Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City; Women Survivors Meeting: Tent Community 1 January 22, 2011 (Indahag); and meeting with the Barangay Council regarding some PSS cases.

Acts of kindness and generosity from friends and strangers continue to amaze, humble and inspire us. Arthur Neame personally came and spent weeks with us as he guided us in the formulation of our long-term plan. Sarangani Governor Migs Dominguez visited us to personally deliver more cash donations, and give words of encouragement and support. Barry Hicks and the various Rotary Clubs in Australia continue to mobilize and send resources, the emails and pictures showing their dedication and commitment to help, are truly touching. Mariz continues to raise funds among her family and colleagues to send to us. Azon and Jasper sent 30 gift certificates for Thai massage for the staff and volunteers. We continue to receive gifts, donations, text messages even from strangers expressing their appreciation and solidarity

To date, a total of P10,769,835.33 cash and non-cash donations have been received by the Balay Mindanaw Operations Center:
