| Helping set
up tents for flood victims. |
At exactly 10 o’clock this
morning, the first of the 95 marine blue-colored tents donated by
Disaster Aid International (DAI) rose in Barangay Indahag, Cagayan
de Oro City. Balay Mindanaw workers, volunteers, local village
people and three disaster response experts from Scotland and
Australia are now busy setting up the first of the two tent
communities that are our modest contribution to the huge task of
providing temporary shelters to those displaced by Sendong. This
marks a significant step in Balay Mindanaw’s evolution into a
disaster response NGO.
By 4 o’clock this
afternoon, the Indahag community led by their Barangay Chairperson
will welcome to the Indahag tent community the first 40 families now
staying at temporary evacuation centers in two public schools in the
city.
Today, 1,287 school supplies
kits are ready for distribution to kindergarten and elementary
school pupils in Barangays Canitoan and Bonbon. With this batch of
school supplies kits, we will have served all the school children in
the 5 barangays assigned to our care.
We also conducted debriefing
session for the staff of Bangko sa Balay Foundation, Inc. (BBFI) who
were affected by Sendong.
Yesterday, we also set up 5
DAI tents on the hospital grounds to help accommodate the growing
number of leptospirosis patients.
Last night, more donations
(estimated cost: P350,000) from the Province of Sarangani arrived
consisting of 53 boxes of sardines, 144 boxes of bottled water, 650
sacks of clothing, and even 16 coffins.
As of today, total cash
donations have reached P2,276,755.40, with pledges of P1,592,650.00,
and goods worth P6.5M.
We wish to again express our
sincere thankfulness to all of you who continue to accompany us in
this journey.
We refuse to be victims. We
choose to be resources.
